Everyday lifestyle habits play a major role in increasing or reducing the risk of cancer, according to oncologist Dr Ruchir Tandon. The senior consultant in medical oncology stated that nearly 40 percent of cancers are preventable if people adopt healthier routines early in life. He highlighted tobacco smoking as the leading preventable cause of cancer worldwide, linking it not only to lung cancer but also to cancers affecting the mouth, throat, bladder, kidney and pancreas. Passive smoking, obesity, lack of exercise and prolonged sitting were also identified as major risk factors.
Dr Tandon further explained that unhealthy diets containing processed meat, excessive red meat and alcohol significantly raise the risk of colorectal, breast and liver cancers. On the other hand, fibre-rich foods, vegetables and olive oil are associated with lower cancer rates. He also warned about lesser-known risks such as poor sleep, night-shift work, unprotected sun exposure and radon gas exposure. The oncologist stressed that small but consistent lifestyle changes, combined with regular cancer screenings, can greatly improve long-term health and lower cancer risk.
