Telangana and Karnataka have taken a major step toward the construction of a mini barrage across the Krishna River. A high-level meeting involving ministers, legislators, and officials from both states was held at the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Secretariat in Hyderabad. Discussions were held regarding the proposed barrage between Kolpur and Koditikonda at an estimated cost of ₹700 crore.
The meeting was attended by Telangana Irrigation Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy, Karnataka Minor Irrigation Minister N. S. Boseraju, and several public representatives. Both states reportedly agreed to construct a barrage with a storage capacity of 0.5 TMC to prevent Krishna river water from going waste during the monsoon season. Officials stated that the project would help provide irrigation and drinking water to areas including Raichur, Makthal, Maganur, and Krishna mandals.
Telangana leaders also requested Karnataka to release 3 TMC of water to the Jurala Project, which is currently facing severe water shortages. Discussions were also held on increasing the storage capacity of the Jurala Project to make maximum use of Krishna waters. If implemented, the plan is expected to benefit Palamuru and Jogulamba Gadwal districts by improving irrigation and drinking water supply.
