Two People Narrowly Escape Danger in Delhi Hostel Incident

A PG hostel building collapse in Delhi has sparked concern across the country, with two young men narrowly escaping the accident. Nitesh Chhib, a second year B.Com student at Delhi University, was sitting in his room with a friend after having lunch when the building suddenly collapsed. Both were trapped under the debris. They managed to share their WhatsApp location with friends, who alerted the authorities. Rescue personnel pulled them out of the rubble about an hour and a half later. Nitesh said he felt numb and could not sense his body properly, and that he regained full consciousness only after being admitted to hospital.

Nitesh said they had no idea the building was in such poor condition and there were no visible cracks or other warning signs suggesting that it might collapse. They were aware that construction work was being carried out in the basement. He said hostels are the only practical accommodation option for many students like him in Delhi and urged the government to ensure strict enforcement of safety regulations. Police have registered an FIR against the building owners. According to the FIR, the owners allegedly knew that the building was old and its foundations were weak but constructed additional floors in pursuit of rental income.
