Trump Announces Greenland Security Deal with Denmark and Greenland

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that the United States, Denmark and Greenland have reached an agreement on the security of Greenland. Trump said the arrangement would give Washington permanent control over the island’s security and allow the United States to expand its military presence there. The agreement is aimed at strengthening security cooperation in the strategically important Arctic region.

Under the proposed arrangement, countries considered U.S. adversaries would not be allowed to establish military bases or maintain military personnel in Greenland without written approval from Washington. Trump also said sensitive investments by U.S. adversaries would require American approval. Denmark and Greenland have emphasized that the agreement recognizes the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark and the Greenlandic people’s right to self-determination. The pact is expected to be signed during next week’s United Nations General Assembly in New York and will still have to go through the necessary parliamentary procedures.
