The Telangana Health Department has warned that the impact of El Niño, coupled with intense heat and water scarcity, could increase the risk of various health problems across the state. Director of Public Health Dr. B. Ravinder Naik issued an advisory in view of the prevailing El Niño conditions and prolonged dry weather. He cautioned that extreme temperatures and water shortages could lead to dehydration, heatstroke, waterborne diseases caused by contaminated drinking water, nutritional deficiencies and mental stress. Pregnant women, infants, senior citizens and people suffering from heart conditions and high blood pressure have been advised to take extra precautions and avoid exposure to extreme heat.
Dr. Ravinder Naik said the government had completed advance preparations to deal with potential health emergencies arising from El Niño conditions. Special beds, IV fluids and essential emergency medicines have been made available at all government hospitals across Telangana. He also stated that adequate stocks of Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) packets had been kept ready with ANMs, ASHA workers and Anganwadi centres to ensure that people receive immediate assistance whenever required. The department has urged the public to remain cautious and follow the health advisory to minimise the risks associated with extreme heat and water scarcity.
