Telangana Liberation Day: A Landmark Day in Hyderabad’s History

September 17 holds an important place in the history of Telangana and Hyderabad. After India became independent on August 15, 1947, the Hyderabad State under the Nizam did not immediately join the Indian Union. The period that followed witnessed political movements and an armed peasant struggle in Telangana against the Nizam’s rule and the prevailing feudal system. The Indian government subsequently launched Operation Polo in September 1948. Hyderabad State was integrated into the Indian Union on September 17, 1948.

The historic day is commemorated through different official and public observances. The Telangana government has referred to September 17 as Praja Palana Dinotsavam (People’s Governance Day) since 2024, while the day is also referred to as Telangana Liberation Day or Hyderabad Liberation Day in other contexts. The state government has highlighted the sacrifices of the armed-struggle martyrs, while central government commemorations have focused on the integration of Hyderabad State and the events surrounding Operation Polo.
