The Supreme Court has made key observations on the local body elections in Andhra Pradesh while hearing a petition filed by the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP). The bench headed by the Chief Justice of India had earlier directed the State Election Commission and the Director General of Police to take necessary steps to ensure that the elections were conducted in a free and fair atmosphere. It also stressed the need to provide adequate security to candidates filing nominations and to prevent untoward incidents during the electoral process.
The court had asked the State Election Commission to consider giving another opportunity to candidates who were unable to file nominations for various reasons. It also called for arrangements to allow nominations to be submitted at district headquarters wherever necessary and sought details on the implementation of its directions. Representing the Election Commission, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the bench that the nomination deadline had been extended and the nomination process had concluded. The authorities also reported taking steps in areas where complaints had been received. The court stressed transparency and security, including CCTV monitoring, and indicated that the election process should move forward, reportedly telling the parties, “All the best, go ahead with the elections.”
