Tata Trusts Chairman Noel Tata has challenged the reappointment of N Chandrasekaran as executive chairman of Tata Sons. In a letter dated October 26 to the company secretary, Noel questioned the validity of the board resolution approving Chandrasekaran’s appointment for another five-year term. The resolution was passed at a Tata Sons board meeting on September 17, 2026. According to media reports, Noel argued that the reappointment proposal was not included in the meeting agenda and alleged that the prescribed procedures had not been properly followed.
Noel has reportedly sought the board meeting’s video recording, minutes and other documents relating to the decision, while raising concerns about the process and potential conflicts of interest. The disagreement has brought differences within the Tata Group’s leadership into sharper focus and raised questions about corporate governance at Tata Sons. However, Noel’s objections represent his position on the matter; they do not, by themselves, establish that the reappointment resolution is legally invalid.
