The Supreme Court has delivered a landmark judgment stating that responsibility for lift accidents in buildings cannot be placed on just one party. The Court ruled that the lift manufacturer, maintenance agency, and building management are all jointly accountable if an accident occurs.
A Bench comprising Justice P.S. Narasimha and Justice Alok Aradhe observed that a lift is an essential mode of public transport within buildings. The Court said that people entrust their lives and safety to the mechanical system the moment they step into a lift. Therefore, ensuring passenger safety is a fundamental responsibility shared by all three stakeholders.
