Air pollution in Delhi and its surrounding National Capital Region (NCR) is once again becoming a serious concern as winter approaches. The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has reportedly announced a series of strict preventive measures to control deteriorating air quality. According to the information provided, the restrictions will remain in force from November 5 to November 20 across Delhi, Gurugram, Faridabad, Sonipat, Ghaziabad and Gautam Buddha Nagar, which includes Noida. Government and private offices in these areas will be required to allow only 50% of their workforce to attend in person, while the remaining employees must work from home. Essential services and continuously operating industries are expected to receive exemptions.
Construction and demolition activities across the NCR will also face restrictions to prevent dust from worsening air pollution. Open construction work involving highways, roads, flyovers, electricity lines and pipelines will reportedly be suspended until November 20. However, exemptions will apply to projects considered essential for public services and national importance, including railways, metro services, airports, bus terminals, hospitals, drinking water and sanitation facilities, and urgent national security and defence-related works. Authorities have also highlighted the recurring rise in pollution during November, citing crop-residue burning, post-Diwali emissions, vehicle exhaust, low wind speeds and increased atmospheric moisture as contributing factors. The restrictions are intended to prevent air quality from reaching severe levels.
