The Karnataka government is considering stricter penalties for motorists who drive two-wheelers and other vehicles on footpaths to avoid traffic congestion. The practice has been causing inconvenience and posing safety risks to pedestrians. Under the proposal, the existing fine of Rs. 500 could be increased to Rs. 5,000 for a first offence. Those caught committing the same violation for a second time could face a penalty of Rs. 10,000.
The Transport and Home departments have submitted the proposal for consideration, and the government is expected to take a final decision after examining the legal aspects. However, the revised penalties have not yet come into effect, and the existing Rs. 500 fine continues to apply until an official notification is issued. The proposed increase is aimed at discouraging dangerous driving on pedestrian pathways and improving road safety.
