Recent reports claimed that the United States had a role in the removal of Imran Khan from the Prime Minister’s post in Pakistan. Responding to these allegations, the US State Department firmly denied any involvement, stating that it had no connection with the political developments leading to Imran Khan’s ouster. The clarification came after an investigative report published details of a conversation between Pakistani diplomat Asad Majeed Khan and US official Donald Lu. When questioned by the media, a US spokesperson dismissed the claims and reiterated that Pakistan’s internal politics are solely its own matter.
In April 2022, a no-confidence motion was introduced against Imran Khan in Pakistan’s National Assembly, ultimately leading to his removal from office. Prior to this, reports suggested that a meeting between Pakistan’s ambassador Asad Majeed Khan and US Assistant Secretary of State Donald Lu discussed the possibility of removing Imran and improving bilateral ties. Leaked diplomatic communications in Pakistan also alleged that Khan’s neutral stance on the Russia-Ukraine conflict contributed to tensions with the US. However, the US has denied all such claims and avoided commenting on specific details mentioned in the reports.
