The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has made significant revisions to the Class 9 social science textbook. The revised edition removes references to the Constitution’s Preamble and eliminates terms such as “secular” and “secularism.” The updates, aligned with the National Education Policy, also introduce content on voter list revision and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process, highlighting the inclusion of millions of young voters. The Election Commission of India has been praised for conducting elections impartially despite challenges like misinformation and fake news.
The revised chapter also includes references to early Indian society, mentioning the elevated status of women in Vedic civilization and excerpts from Manusmriti discussing social order and governance. Additionally, NCERT has described the judiciary as an independent and impartial institution, revising earlier content that had faced criticism. These changes are expected to spark further academic and public debate.
