WTC 2027 Race Heats Up: How Many Wins Does India Need to Reach the Final?

The World Test Championship 2025-27 race is beginning to intensify, with teams competing for the top two spots that will secure a place in the final. India’s next assignment is the crucial two-Test series against Sri Lanka, beginning on August 15. India are currently fifth in the standings with a 48.15 points percentage after nine Tests. They have nine Tests remaining — two against Sri Lanka, two against New Zealand and five against Australia.

India will have little room for error in the remaining fixtures. According to the latest qualification projections, six wins and two draws from their remaining nine Tests could be enough to keep India in contention, although the exact qualification scenario will depend on results involving other teams. Australia currently lead the table, followed by South Africa and New Zealand, while Bangladesh are also in the race. Sri Lanka, meanwhile, have four Tests remaining after the upcoming India series and will face South Africa, Pakistan and New Zealand later in the cycle.

The WTC final is scheduled for June 9 to 13, 2027, at The Oval in London. The ICC has confirmed The Oval as the venue for the next final. Since WTC qualification is based on points percentage, every win, draw and loss can significantly alter the standings as the remaining matches are played.
