India observes National Doctors Day every year on July 1 to honour the dedication and service of doctors. The day commemorates the birth and death anniversary of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy (1 July 1882 – 1 July 1962), one of India's most respected physicians and former Chief Minister of West Bengal. The observance recognises the invaluable role doctors play in protecting lives, treating illnesses, and promoting public health.
Doctors not only diagnose and treat diseases but also guide patients on preventive healthcare, healthy lifestyles, vaccinations, and regular health check ups. They provide emotional support, help patients make informed decisions, and strengthen trust between medical professionals and society. National Doctors Day also highlights the need to ensure safe working conditions and respect for healthcare professionals.
Doctors Day is celebrated on different dates across the world. India marks it on July 1, the United States on March 30, Brazil on October 18, Cuba on December 3, China on August 19, and Canada on May 1. While the dates differ, the purpose remains the same to honour the commitment, compassion, and contribution of doctors to society.
