Iran-Oman Reach Agreement on Hormuz Shipping Routes

Amid continuing tensions between the United States and Iran, Tehran and Muscat have reached an agreement on a designated shipping route through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said the two countries had agreed on a shipping-route map following weeks of technical discussions. The arrangement is aimed at facilitating safer passage for commercial vessels through the crucial waterway.

Baghaei said consultations between Iran and Oman on other aspects of the arrangement are still continuing. He also indicated that the agreement by itself does not guarantee the immediate restoration of normal maritime traffic, with broader regional conditions and restrictions remaining factors. Iran and Oman had earlier reaffirmed their commitment to safe passage through the Strait while emphasising their sovereignty and sovereign rights over their respective territorial waters.
