Significant changes have been introduced in the Intermediate first-year science syllabus for the 2026-27 academic year. The revised textbooks have already reached government junior colleges across the state, while English-medium books are being sold at the Telugu Academy building in Hyderabad. In Chemistry, three chapters — States of Matter, Hydrogen and Its Compounds, and Environmental Chemistry — have been removed. In Physics, the chapters “Physical World” and “Units and Measurements” have been merged into a single lesson, while a new chapter titled “Physics of Emerging Technology” has been added to improve awareness about Artificial Intelligence and modern technologies. In Mathematics 1-A, two new chapters, “Sets and Relations” and “Sequences and Series,” have been introduced, while “Simple Trigonometric Equations and Solutions” has been removed. No changes have been made to Mathematics 1-B.
The syllabus revision comes after nearly 12 years without major changes in Intermediate science subjects. Authorities had faced criticism that the existing syllabus did not fully align with competitive exams such as JEE Main and NEET. Zoology and Botany syllabi have also undergone changes, with chapters related to Economic Zoology and Economic Botany being newly added to help students in competitive examinations. Meanwhile, the Mathematics examination pattern has also been revised. Mathematics papers, which previously carried 75 marks each, will now have a 60-mark written examination along with 15 marks for practicals, similar to Physics and Chemistry. The new question paper pattern will include Sections A, B, and C with short, medium, and long-answer questions.
