The Supreme Court of India has agreed to examine the constitutional validity of Hindu Endowment and Temple Administration laws implemented in three southern states and one Union Territory. The petitions challenge the extent of government control over temple administration and religious institutions, raising key constitutional and religious freedom concerns.
A bench of the apex court withdrew its earlier direction asking petitioners to approach respective High Courts and clarified that it would directly hear the matter on merits. The court stated that the issue involves substantial constitutional questions concerning the administration of temples and the powers exercised by state governments under endowment laws.
