Tummidihatti Barrage: Key Telangana-Maharashtra Meeting in Delhi on September 1

A crucial meeting on the proposed Tummidihatti Barrage across the Pranahita River is scheduled to be held in Delhi on September 1. The meeting, chaired by the Central Water Commission (CWC) chairman, will take place at 11 am at Seva Bhavan, with senior officials from the water resources departments of Telangana and Maharashtra expected to participate. The discussions will focus on technical and inter-state issues related to the project. The meeting follows Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy’s continued efforts to move the project forward.

Telangana has been seeking Maharashtra’s consent to raise the proposed barrage height from the earlier agreed 148 metres to 152 metres. The state government has told the Centre that drawing the required water through gravity at 148 metres would not be feasible and that using large pumps would significantly increase power consumption. Telangana has argued that raising the water level would enable the project to operate with lower electricity costs and provide long-term benefits. The government has also cited studies indicating that the additional submergence from raising the water level would be limited. Telangana is continuing discussions with the Centre and Maharashtra with the aim of expediting the project and providing irrigation to drought-prone and backward regions.
