Iran Warns Ukraine of Consequences After Deadly Attack on Commercial Vessel in Caspian Sea

Iran has strongly condemned what it described as a Ukrainian attack on one of its commercial vessels in the Caspian Sea, saying one sailor was killed and another injured. Tehran warned that it would take necessary measures to safeguard its national interests and assets and said Ukraine would face consequences for the attack. Iran also called on European countries to restrain Kyiv to prevent a further expansion of the conflict. The incident comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions, with Tehran once again maintaining that it is not a party to the Russia-Ukraine war, even as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has accused Russia of providing satellite intelligence to Iran.

The Caspian Sea route has assumed greater strategic importance for Iran amid US sanctions, serving as a northern trade corridor for goods arriving from countries including China. Against this backdrop, the reported attack on an Iranian commercial vessel has raised fresh concerns about a potential widening of regional tensions. Meanwhile, Russia launched ballistic missile and drone attacks on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities early Sunday. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, seven ballistic missiles and 136 drones were deployed in the strikes, which also targeted areas including Chernihiv and Kharkiv. Six people were reported killed and several others injured.
