Located near the Mandvi forest region in Kinwat taluka of Nanded district, Maharashtra, the Shri Unkeshwar Mahadev Temple is a revered Shaivite pilgrimage destination, attracting devotees from Maharashtra, Telangana and neighbouring areas. According to local legend, Lord Rama visited this region during his exile along with Goddess Sita and Lakshmana. During their stay, Sage Sharbhanga was reportedly suffering from a severe skin condition while continuing to pray to Lord Rama. Legend holds that Lord Rama used his divine powers to shoot two arrows to help the sage. One is believed to have created a natural hot-water spring, while the other established the Shiva Lingam at the sacred site. After bathing in the spring and worshipping Lord Shiva, the sage is said to have recovered from his illness. These traditional beliefs form an important part of the temple’s spiritual history and continue to draw devotees seeking blessings and peace.
The temple’s main attraction is its natural hot-water spring, which remains warm throughout the year. The water is believed to contain minerals such as sulphur that may offer relief from certain skin conditions. However, claims that the spring cures diseases require independent medical evidence, and its waters should not be considered a substitute for appropriate medical treatment. An ashram associated with the temple also offers naturopathy services. Local tradition further associates the temple’s development with Queen Ahilyabai Holkar, who is remembered for supporting religious sites and public facilities across India. Daily rituals are performed at the temple, with special abhishekams on Mondays. Festivals such as Maha Shivaratri, Sri Rama Navami, Datta Jayanti, Vinayaka Chavithi and the holy months of Shravan and Kartik are celebrated with devotion. Annadanam is another important service provided to devotees. The temple is located approximately 56 kilometres from Adilabad and 124 kilometres from Nanded, with access by road and public transport.
