India’s first Super Pressure Balloon was unveiled in Vijayawada by Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu. Developed by Red Balloon Aerospace, the balloon is made of polymer nanocomposite material and filled with hydrogen. It is equipped with a GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) module and can carry payloads up to 50 kg, including six scientific sensors.
The minister described it as a milestone for Andhra Pradesh and highlighted its potential in improving connectivity in remote, tribal, and coastal regions. He noted that India’s space industry, boosted by government support, currently contributes nearly $8 billion in business and is projected to reach $40 billion in the next decade. Super Pressure Balloons operate in the stratosphere for long durations and are useful for scientific research, communication expansion, and industrial corridor monitoring.
