India’s First Indigenous Bullet Train Trials Likely to Begin in May-June 2027

India’s ambitious bullet train project has reached a significant milestone, with trial runs of the country’s first indigenous high-speed train expected to begin in May or June 2027. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the trials would be conducted on a section of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor, where construction work is progressing towards completion. He added that passenger services could begin within two to four months after the testing phase is successfully completed.

Speaking at the “Namo for Vikasit Bharat” event in Vadodara, Vaishnaw said the first body frame of India’s indigenous high-speed train had been completed and sent for squeeze testing to assess the structural strength of the coaches. The development marks another important step towards India’s entry into the high-speed rail era. The minister also indicated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi could inaugurate the service after the completion of trials and other required procedures. The Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor is expected to become the country’s first operational bullet train route.
