For 19 year old Monu Mehturbala from Araria, Bihar, his mother’s health means everything. When his mother, Lalti Devi, suddenly fell seriously ill after a fish bone became lodged in her throat, the family struggled to find relief despite seeking treatment at several hospitals. Deeply worried about her condition, Monu prayed for her recovery and made a vow that he would visit all 12 Jyotirlingas across India by running if his mother recovered. When she gradually overcame the health crisis, Monu was determined to fulfil his promise. On March 15 this year, he set off from Patna to begin his extraordinary journey, turning his prayer into a mission of devotion and endurance.
So far, Monu has covered approximately 8,000 kilometres and visited six Jyotirlingas, running nearly 50 kilometres every day. Two other people are accompanying him in support of his journey. His mother feels proud of her son’s determination, while his father, Mahesh Chauhan, says Monu has been devoted to spirituality since childhood, although he never imagined his son would undertake such a demanding challenge. Coming from a financially struggling family, Monu sells pani puri to support the household and also helps his father, who works as an electrician. His brother Sonu is an electrician as well. Monu’s interest in cricket encouraged him to focus on fitness from the eighth grade, which he says is now helping him during the long journey. Although his father initially offered whatever financial assistance he could, Monu is currently arranging the money he needs himself. He has resolved to complete his pilgrimage to all 12 Jyotirlingas before returning home.
