Former Minister and Deputy Floor Leader Harish Rao wrote to the Polavaram Project Authority (PPA) highlighting the potential threat to Telangana villages due to Polavaram backwater flooding. The Authority appreciated his initiative to safeguard the lives, livelihoods, and agricultural lands of people living in the Godavari basin region of Telangana. The PPA assured that the submergence issue would be treated as a priority and resolved appropriately.
In its response, the PPA recalled the decisions taken during the meeting between Telangana and Andhra Pradesh officials on April 8, 2025. The Authority stated that all areas likely to be affected by the project’s maximum water level of 45.72 metres would be protected through strong engineering measures. If protection is not feasible, land acquisition and rehabilitation would be provided as per norms. The PPA also clarified that water is currently being stored only up to 41.15 metres in the first phase, as approved by the Union Cabinet. Harish Rao urged the Centre, Andhra Pradesh Government, and the PPA to implement flood protection and rehabilitation measures without delay.
