The poor conditions at a boys’ high school came to light during a surprise inspection by Food Commission member Krishna Kiran on Thursday. Students reportedly complained that worms were being found in their food, drinking water was spoiled and meals were sometimes inadequately cooked. After inspecting the kitchen and food being served, Krishna Kiran expressed serious displeasure and questioned the officials concerned. He directed the DEO to consider shifting the cooking staff immediately and asked that the lapses at the school be brought to the Collector’s notice. He also inspected the water tank after students complained about the quality of drinking water and objected to old eggs being supplied to them.
Krishna Kiran also took serious note of complaints that the school headmaster was allegedly smoking on the premises. He questioned the MEO over the lack of supervision and recommended notices to two MEOs. He also noticed students being discouraged from raising complaints and assured them that they could contact him directly if they faced threats or intimidation. He warned that if there was no improvement within three days, the concerned officials would be called to Vijayawada. Officials from the ICDS and Social Welfare departments were also present during the inspection.
