The Supreme Court has raised key questions over alleged shortcomings in the drug pricing mechanism. It questioned the Centre on why there is such a significant difference between the maximum retail price (MRP) of medicines and the prices at which retailers purchase them. The court sought clarity on the reasons behind this gap and whether the existing pricing framework adequately protects consumers' interests.
The court expressed concern that the current system appeared to benefit pharmaceutical manufacturers disproportionately. It also raised questions about the functioning of the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA), which oversees drug price regulation. After hearing the matter, the Supreme Court reserved its judgment. Transparency in medicine pricing and the protection of consumers from excessive price disparities remain key issues in the case.
