The Central Fisheries Ministry has approved a major expansion of the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) headquarters in Hyderabad with an estimated cost of ₹100 crore. The expansion will be carried out over 10 acres and will include a large auditorium, exhibition centre, laboratories, and other infrastructure facilities. The NFDB was established in Hyderabad in 2006, and its iconic fish-shaped building was constructed in 2012 in Rajendranagar on a five-acre site provided by the Telangana government.
With the fisheries sector growing rapidly, the Centre plans to enhance services including exports. A dedicated export promotion division will be set up along with a large exhibition centre showcasing global fish, shrimp, and aquatic species. The facility will also host national and international exhibitions. A state-of-the-art national fisheries laboratory will support research and innovation, while a 600-seat auditorium, fisheries management centres, and farmer accommodation facilities will also be developed.
The Telangana government has allotted additional 10 acres from Professor Jayashankar Telangana Agricultural University for the project, and tenders will be floated soon for construction.
