Scientists have discovered that Mount Erebus, an active volcano in Antarctica, continuously releases microscopic gold particles into the atmosphere. According to a study published in Geophysical Research Letters, the volcano emits nearly 80 grams of gold dust every day, amounting to around 29 kilograms annually, with an estimated value of ₹18.9 crore.
Researchers found that these tiny gold particles can travel up to 1,000 kilometres through the atmosphere before settling on the Antarctic snow. The study highlights the unique geological activity of Mount Erebus and provides valuable insights into volcanic emissions and the movement of microscopic mineral particles.
