The hugely popular Mirzapur franchise, which built a strong following on the OTT platform through three successful seasons, is now preparing to make its theatrical debut. Mirzapur: The Movie is scheduled to hit cinemas on September 4, marking an interesting transition for a franchise that has primarily been consumed by audiences at home. The film has already sparked discussion over whether viewers who have watched the series on OTT will be willing to buy tickets and experience the story on the big screen.
Producer Farhan Akhtar has said that the decision to bring Mirzapur to theatres was driven by demand from the franchise’s fans. Characters such as Kaleen Bhaiya, Guddu Pandit and Munna Bhaiya have developed a strong following over the years. Actor Pankaj Tripathi has also highlighted the difference between watching the story individually on OTT and experiencing it collectively in a theatre. If Mirzapur: The Movie succeeds at the box office, it could encourage filmmakers to explore more OTT-to-theatre adaptations. For now, the biggest question is whether the franchise’s digital popularity will translate into strong theatrical footfalls and box-office numbers.
