The Andhra Pradesh government has launched a major initiative to improve the lives of construction and other unorganized workers by transforming traditional labour addas into modern integrated welfare centres. Acting on the directions of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, the state plans to establish pilot “Labour Adda” centres at 15 locations across Andhra Pradesh. A model centre has already been set up in Vijayawada, while similar facilities are being developed in Visakhapatnam, Rajamahendravaram, Nellore, and Tirupati. These centres will provide essential facilities including toilets, drinking water, rest areas, televisions, health support, and assistance for applying to government welfare schemes. Departments such as Municipal Administration, MEPMA, MSME, Labour, and Skill Development will jointly operate these centres.
The Labour Addas will function as one-stop support hubs for workers. Help desks will assist labourers in registering on welfare boards and the e-Shram portal, linking Aadhaar cards, opening bank accounts, and accessing insurance, pension, and social security benefits without middlemen. Contractors and employers will also be able to connect with workers through these centres, helping labourers secure employment more efficiently. On days when workers do not find jobs, they will receive skill development training, exposure to modern construction technologies, and awareness on workplace safety and advanced tools. The government will also support workers’ children through education guidance, job training, employment assistance, and entrepreneurship opportunities. Health camps, Ann Canteen coupons, and CSR-backed medical services will further strengthen the welfare ecosystem for labourers and their families.
