A social media satire trend that began in India as the “Cockroach Janata Party” has now evolved into a large digital youth movement attracting international attention. The movement reportedly gained momentum after comments linked to Chief Justice Surya Kant referring to some unemployed youth protests as “cockroaches” and “parasites”. Though clarification was later issued, the trend had already exploded across social media platforms.
The movement was launched on May 16 by Abhijeet Deepke, a public relations graduate from the United States and former associate of Aam Aadmi Party. Within days, the group’s Instagram page reportedly crossed 15 million followers. The campaign presents itself as a voice for unemployed and frustrated youth, raising issues such as education reforms, healthcare, employment opportunities, public services, and accountability in governance through memes and satire.
The trend has now spread to Pakistan, where groups such as “Cockroach Awami Party” and “Cockroach Awami League” have emerged on social media. These groups openly admitted drawing inspiration from the Indian movement and claim to represent the voice of young people dissatisfied with political systems. Using the cockroach as a symbol of survival and resistance, youth in both countries are expressing frustration over unemployment and governance failures through digital activism.
