To safeguard critical financial data and ensure the uninterrupted functioning of core banking systems, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has established a state-of-the-art high-security data centre in Odisha. The facility has been strategically located in a geologically stable area with minimal seismic risk. Officials stated that the centre has been designed in accordance with international standards, incorporating a Tier-4 certification design to ensure maximum reliability and resilience.
Situated far from India’s western and northern borders, the location is considered relatively secure from potential missile or drone threats. This marks RBI’s second data centre, with the primary facility already operational in Kharghar, Navi Mumbai.
The new data centre has been developed to host critical computing infrastructure supporting currency management, payment and settlement systems, and regulatory data processing functions. When the project was initiated in 2023 at Info Valley-2 in Odisha, spread across 18.55 acres, questions were raised regarding the choice of location. However, sources indicate that strategic security considerations were prioritized over logistical or operational convenience.
The decision is also understood to have been influenced by past instances during periods of India-Pakistan tensions, when a commercial bank had to urgently shift its data centre operations from Jaipur to Mumbai. Additionally, the availability of reliable power and water resources in the region played a significant role in selecting the site for this critical infrastructure.
