Apple has once again reinforced its premium positioning in the Indian smartphone market with its latest generation of iPhones. The company has also entered the foldable smartphone segment with the iPhone Duo, whose top-end variant is reportedly priced at ₹4,49,900 in India. This is nearly twice the average annual per-capita income of around ₹2.33 lakh. As a result, owning a high-end iPhone remains financially out of reach for a large section of Indian consumers, with the brand primarily appealing to affluent buyers.
However, Apple’s strategy in India goes beyond simply selling smartphones. The iPhone has developed a strong premium image and is often viewed as a status symbol. The company therefore appears to be focusing on consumers willing to pay a premium for its products rather than competing primarily on affordability. At the same time, financing options such as EMIs, credit cards and other purchase schemes make expensive iPhones accessible to a wider customer base. Apple’s strong presence in India’s premium smartphone segment further highlights the company’s strategy of combining high prices with brand value and exclusivity.
