YouTube, one of the world’s most popular social media platforms, is introducing a new feature designed to give users greater control over their viewing experience. The platform has started rolling out Custom Feeds, replacing the existing topic chips on the home page. The update also includes changes to the mobile app’s navigation. With this feature, users can create personalised video feeds instead of relying entirely on the recommendations displayed by YouTube. By tapping the ‘+’ button at the top of the home page and entering a preferred topic, type of content or specific interest, users can generate a dedicated video stream based on their prompt.
The custom feeds will automatically update as new videos matching users’ interests become available. Free users can save up to three custom feeds at a time, while YouTube Premium subscribers can save up to eight. YouTube CEO Neal Mohan shared details about the feature on X, saying it would give users more control over their home pages. The platform is also testing a redesigned top navigation bar within the mobile app’s Home tab. The updated bar includes a Subscriptions feed, along with shortcuts for Live and Music. Eligible subscribers will also see a Movies & TV option.
The rollout is currently available to users in the United States who are over 13 years old and have their language settings set to English. Watch and search history must be enabled for the feature to work. Custom feeds created in the mobile app will also sync with desktop browsers, allowing users to access their personalised video streams across devices. YouTube is expected to expand the update to more users over time.
