Indian nationals account for a significant share of foreign prisoners held in Bangladesh, according to local media reports. At least 407 foreign nationals from 15 countries are reportedly serving sentences in Bangladeshi prisons for offences including drug trafficking, human trafficking and gold smuggling. Of these, 238 are Indians. The reports state that 168 Indian prisoners have already completed their sentences but remain in detention because arrangements for their repatriation have not been completed. Other foreign prisoners reportedly include nationals of Myanmar, Nigeria, Pakistan and Malaysia.
An official from the High Commission of India said Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs had shared lists of Indian prisoners who had completed their sentences. However, delays have occurred because authorities face difficulties verifying whether the individuals are Indian nationals. The Indian mission has requested permission to meet and speak with the prisoners and is awaiting a response from the Bangladeshi ministry. The process of confirming the prisoners’ nationality is continuing, the official said.
