Social media platform X has taken strict action against the misuse of its AI assistant Grok, following widespread criticism over the creation of obscene and morphed images of women. The issue, often referred to as the AI bikini trend, sparked global outrage.
After directions from the Indian government, X removed around 3,500 posts and deleted 600 accounts involved in generating illegal and explicit content. Grok, developed by xAI, was allegedly used to manipulate normal photos into nude or semi-nude images, including those of public figures.
Responding to the controversy, Elon Musk stated that X would not tolerate obscene content on its platform. The company has also restricted Grok’s image-generation feature, making it available only to premium subscribers.
India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) raised concerns that such misuse violates the Information Technology Act, 2000. The ministry warned that social media platforms must strictly follow IT laws or face legal action, and directed a comprehensive technical and governance review of Grok AI.
