An Apple Watch’s ‘Fall Detection’ feature helped save the life of Mohammed Islam from Ohio, USA. Feeling unwell, Islam had taken leave from work and was alone at home. He experienced breathing difficulties, ear pain and trouble walking. While stepping outside to throw garbage, he suddenly collapsed. After detecting the fall, his Apple Watch automatically contacted emergency services, helping him receive timely medical attention. Doctors at the University of Cincinnati hospital later found a blood clot in his lungs.
The Apple Watch Fall Detection feature uses sensors to identify a hard fall and immediately alerts the user. If there is no response for about a minute, the watch starts a 30-second countdown and then automatically calls emergency services if the user remains unresponsive. It also shares the exact location with emergency contacts. The feature is enabled by default for users aged 55 and above, while younger users can activate it manually. In Islam’s case, the technology played a crucial role in getting him help on time.
