OpenAI has formally flagged its concerns about competition in the artificial intelligence sector to European Union regulators, highlighting challenges faced when competing against dominant tech giants like Alphabet’s Google. The company said that the arguments it presented to EU authorities last month were consistent with its public stance on ensuring fair competition in AI, particularly amid growing antitrust scrutiny on Google.During a September 24 meeting with EU antitrust chief Teresa Ribera, OpenAI representatives reportedly discussed the barriers smaller players face and urged regulators to take action to prevent large platforms from locking in users. OpenAI also stated that the European Commission is already reviewing how vertically integrated platforms are using their market positions to strengthen control in AI — including by examining specific intercompany agreements. Both the European Commission and Google declined to comment on the matter when approached by Reuters.OpenAI, which now boasts over 800 million weekly ChatGPT users, recently became the world’s most valuable startup with a $500 billion valuation, following a secondary share sale last week.
