Google is reportedly planning to introduce a new feature called Projects in its Gemini AI platform, which will function similarly to OpenAI’s ChatGPT Projects released in December 2024. This feature will provide a partitioned or sandboxed space within the app, allowing users to start multiple chats on a single topic. While the feature is still under development, it is expected to be rolled out to users soon. Several new options in Gemini's version of Projects have already been revealed ahead of the official release.
According to Android Authority, Google has been working on this feature for some time. The latest beta build of the Google app (v16.48.54.sa.arm64) reveals the interface and several capabilities of Projects. Although hidden within the app’s code, the feature is not yet available to any users, including beta testers.
During an APK teardown, the feature was discovered and could be turned on, but it is not yet usable as it requires server-side activation. Screenshots indicate that the introduction window is titled “Stay organised with Projects” and highlights features such as isolating chats by topic, setting a project focus area to help Gemini align with it, and uploading files to provide context for the topic.
When users first enter Projects in Gemini, they must choose a project name. They are then directed to the main interface where sources and focus instructions can be added. The focus area acts as guidance for Gemini to behave in a specific manner, and by outlining goals, users can define the scope and requirements of the project.
However, there is a restriction: users can upload a maximum of 10 files per project. It is not yet clear whether this limit will differ for Pro or Ultra tier subscribers, but it could impact usability for more complex tasks. Additionally, users can view their projects in a side panel and pin frequently used projects.
It is important to note that all this information comes from an APK teardown, and Google has not officially announced the feature. Until its release, it is best to treat this as a tentative update.
