A California jury is set to begin deliberations in the high-profile lawsuit filed by billionaire Elon Musk against OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman. The three-week trial in Oakland near San Francisco focused on Musk’s allegations that OpenAI abandoned its original nonprofit mission and transformed into a profit-driven artificial intelligence giant. Musk claims his $38 million contribution to OpenAI was intended to support safe and open AI research for the benefit of humanity, but was instead used to build a commercial business valued at nearly $850 billion after the success of ChatGPT.
The trial featured testimony from several leading Silicon Valley figures, with both sides questioning each other’s credibility. OpenAI argued that Musk’s claims are inconsistent and legally delayed, while Musk’s legal team accused Sam Altman and co-founder Greg Brockman of breaking promises and prioritizing profits over public interest. If Musk wins the case, OpenAI could be forced to return to its nonprofit structure, potentially affecting its ties with major investors such as Microsoft, Amazon, and SoftBank. The jury will also examine whether Microsoft knowingly supported OpenAI’s transition away from its original nonprofit model.
