A newly launched Indian-origin app called eicon is transforming the way users experience museums by turning smartphones into personal art guides. Developed by Chennai-based art platform Asign, the app allows users to point their camera at artworks to instantly identify them and access detailed information such as the artist, title, medium, and provenance.
The app also provides curator-style insights and allows users to create a personal diary of their museum visits by uploading images and notes. Currently, eicon supports collections from major museums like The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, and The Art Institute of Chicago, with plans to expand further. The platform aims to combine institutional museum data with crowd-sourced contributions to enhance accuracy and depth of information.
