The Software Freedom Law Centre (SFLC) has objected to the takedown notices issued by Delhi Police concerning its social media account. The organisation has alleged that the notices seeking the removal of posts documenting online censorship violate the fundamental right to freedom of expression guaranteed under Article 19 of the Indian Constitution. SFLC maintains that documenting instances of online censorship is not a criminal offence.
The organisation has also described the notices issued to its X account as unlawful. It has raised concerns over the police action, arguing that such measures could restrict the ability of civil society groups to monitor and report online censorship. SFLC’s objection highlights the broader debate over the balance between law enforcement actions and the constitutional protection of free speech in the digital space.
