As the AI race heats up in Silicon Valley, ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini have emerged as leading platforms. OpenAI’s ChatGPT initially dominated the market, while Google struggled with early setbacks like the Bard fiasco. However, Gemini has made a strong recovery, leveraging Google’s vast distribution network.
Website traffic data for 2025 shows ChatGPT’s global share dropping from 86.7% to 64.5%, while Gemini surged from 5.7% to 21.5%. Other platforms like Grok, DeepSeek, Claude and Microsoft Copilot captured smaller portions of traffic. These shifts mainly impact OpenAI and Google, as other platforms primarily operate through integrations rather than web access.
The decline in ChatGPT’s traffic may have prompted CEO Sam Altman to declare a “code red” in November 2025, pausing non-ChatGPT projects after Gemini 3 Pro outperformed GPT-5.1. OpenAI later released GPT-5.2 to regain competitiveness. With Google’s vast resources and distribution, the web was the only space where both could compete directly. As users migrate to Gemini, OpenAI faces growing pressure to innovate quickly.
