The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has issued a notice to Meta, seeking a detailed explanation after a BBC World Service Eye investigation alleged that Instagram approved paid advertisements promoting child sexual abuse material (CSAM). According to the investigation published on July 3, the ads allegedly directed users to Telegram channels where such illegal content was being sold, raising serious concerns over Meta's advertising review and content moderation systems.
The Centre has directed Meta to immediately disable any advertisements or content facilitating access to CSAM and explain how such ads bypassed its moderation process. Meta stated that it has a zero-tolerance policy toward child sexual exploitation, removed the reported content, suspended associated accounts, and is strengthening its AI-driven detection and safety mechanisms. The incident has intensified regulatory scrutiny over digital platforms and renewed calls for stronger child safety safeguards online.
