For the first time in the history of the internet, automated bot traffic has surpassed human-generated web traffic, according to data shared by Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince. Prince revealed that AI-driven agentic traffic has grown much faster than expected, causing bots to overtake human activity online ahead of earlier projections. Cloudflare's analysis shows that bots now account for 57.5% of internet traffic, while human traffic has dropped to 42.5%. The shift is being driven primarily by advanced AI agents rather than traditional web crawlers or malicious bots.
These AI-powered agents are increasingly being used to perform complex online tasks such as comparing hotel and flight prices, browsing product pages, gathering information for AI chatbots, handling customer service interactions, and even placing orders on behalf of users. While bots now dominate HTTP request traffic, humans still lead in overall engagement through app usage, video streaming, and social media consumption. Cloudflare believes this trend signals a major transformation in how the internet operates, with AI agents becoming key participants in the digital ecosystem.
