Holiday travelers heading through U.S. airports this season may experience faster security screening thanks to Apple’s newly expanded Digital ID feature, now accepted at more than 250 TSA checkpoints nationwide.
The feature allows iPhone users to store a secure, Real-ID–compatible identity document directly in the Apple Wallet, eliminating the need to present a physical ID at select domestic checkpoints. Android users can access a similar function through Google Wallet’s ID Pass.
To set it up, travelers must:
Add their passport information to the Apple Wallet
Complete the in-app identity verification
Use the Digital ID at supported TSA checkpoints by double-tapping the side button and holding the device near a scanner
Apple says all data remains encrypted, and neither airports nor third-party companies can track usage or access personal information. iPhones must be updated to iOS 26 to use the feature.
The Digital ID also works on the Apple Watch.
Users can:
Unlock their phone
Hold it near the TSA scanner
Tap “Continue” when prompted
Wait for the blue check mark confirming successful verification
Alternatively, travelers can scan the QR code linked to their ID Pass and authorize sharing when prompted.
Digital IDs cannot be used for international travel.
TSA advises passengers to carry a physical ID as backup.
Seventeen U.S. states now permit digital driver’s licenses in state apps or wallets, which TSA also accepts at designated checkpoints.
With adoption increasing across airports, digital IDs could significantly streamline travel for millions during the busy holiday season.
