US Tightens Passport Rules for Children Born in America

The Donald Trump administration is preparing to tighten the requirements for passports issued to children born in the United States. The move is aimed at limiting birthright citizenship for children of certain immigrants and curbing birth tourism. According to a Reuters report, parents or guardians applying for a child’s passport may soon be required to provide documents establishing their own citizenship or immigration status.

Under the proposed rules, applicants could be asked to submit a valid passport, birth certificate, I-94 arrival record or documents proving permanent residency. Authorities would use these records to determine whether the child is eligible for a US passport. The proposal is expected to face legal challenges, but Reuters reported that the administration has directed that the new requirements be implemented from September 5.
