Anthropic recently revealed that it has developed an extremely powerful artificial intelligence model called Mythos, but restricted its access due to serious safety concerns. The company partnered with 11 organizations, all based in the United States, to help address potential risks. Within weeks, the model triggered global concern because of its ability to detect and exploit vulnerabilities in critical systems such as banking networks, power grids, and government infrastructure.
World leaders and institutions reacted swiftly, trying to assess the scale of the threat. The United Kingdom was the only country outside the United States granted access to the model, where it underwent independent testing. Officials from major financial and security institutions warned that Mythos could significantly change the nature of cyber threats. Meanwhile, countries like China and Russia viewed the development as a sign of growing technological imbalance in the global AI race.
Experts say Mythos highlights how advanced AI systems are becoming geopolitical tools, similar to strategic weapons. Governments are increasingly concerned about the lack of global coordination and regulatory frameworks to manage such technologies. Anthropic stated that similar models could become widely available within 18 months, leaving limited time for organizations worldwide to strengthen their cybersecurity defenses.
