UPSC educator Vikas Divyakirti has triggered a fresh debate with his remarks on the Ramayana and its alleged connections with Sri Lanka. He claimed that ordinary people in Sri Lanka are largely unfamiliar with the names of Lord Ram and Ravana, suggesting that these figures do not hold the same prominence in Sri Lankan mythological traditions as they do in India. His comments have once again drawn attention to the differences between popular interpretations of the epic and the cultural narratives associated with Sri Lanka.
Divyakirti also questioned the claims surrounding certain locations in Sri Lanka that are popularly linked to the Ramayana. He specifically referred to a structure believed by some to represent Lord Hanuman's footprint and raised questions about the claims associated with it. His remarks have reignited discussions about the relationship between mythology, historical evidence and popular beliefs. The debate has also brought renewed attention to how various Ramayana-related traditions are interpreted across different regions.
